Creating e-learning without programming
The production of e-learning often interposes programmers and software designers between the e-learning product and the subject matter experts (SMEs). Mostly, SMEs create a curriculum and learning content that is handed over to the programmers who merge it with program code. Hence the influence of the SMEs on the e-learning product is limited: To change content or functionality, they must involve the programmers, as learning content and program code are blended in one. An extra step which can often introduce its own problems
To bring e-learning as close as possible to the SMEs, Avallain uses Learning Method Objects to separate code from content and has so developed the Avallain Author, a tool that allows SME to create learning material themselves - without programming.
Hence, each member of a production team concentrates on his/her strengths: The programmers take responsibility for the technical implementation (of the interactions and types of exercises); the SMEs focus on (the didactic preparation of) the content.
The great advantage of this production technique (from the pedagogical point of view) is that the content is input directly by the SMEs into the authoring system. The preview allows the author to inspect the interactive processing of the content from the learner’s point of view, check whether targets are being achieved and make any necessary adjustments at any time.
Educational quality thus is assured immediately by the SMEs themselves and not merely at the end of the production process by programmers. This approach allows the production of a large amount of interactive material in short time.
Simple, intuitive handling - direct control of result
The Avallain Author enables the development of appealing learning material out of any content with a rich variety of methods ranging from classic interactions like multiple choice to explorative learning and the simulation of social interactions. Currently the Avallain Author supports 58+ learning methods (interactions/exercises).
