With the rising global disease burden and escalating health care costs governments and other organizations are shifting their attention to preventive and pro-motive health programs as a more cost effective means of addressing these challenges. One approach is through mass public health education. However, a common challenge for such programs has been on how to provide acceptable content; remain relevant and responsive to the genuine health education needs of the populations being served; and ensuring sustainability of programs. Guided by the fact that the greatest burden of disease is in low and middle income countries(LMIC); and that health care resources – such as health care professionals, health care infrastructure, and health care financing are more scarce in these settings; Avallain is designing products to be used in advancing health literacy initiatives in the most sustainable and cost effective way. Specifically, we are developing a database of basic health information on medical conditions that contribute to the greatest burden of disease on request by several partners. This information is simplified to make it easy for a lay person to understand; has been localized (country-contextualized to 5 African countries) to our best ability; and is available as SMS deliverable content and on a mobile platform. This health literacy package utilizes the increasing penetration of mobile usage in LMIC and increases access to basic medical information to the most remotely-located person on any part of the country in the countries we operate in. Whether a user wants to look up medical conditions, browse medical procedures, check treatment options or need basic first aid – our products offer answers to everyday health questions. By governments or organizations partnering with us we are able to tailor-make products that best help meet their population health objectives in an effective manner.
